More than 100 units of Nagauri Paan Methi were installed in Nagaur, now there is talk of getting GI tag.
Nagaur. Be it the kitchen of home or five star hotels, the fragrance of Nagauri Paan Methi is smelling everywhere. Nagauri Paan Methi has now become a necessity in every kitchen like other spices. Its demand has increased manifold in the last few years. Many renowned companies of the country have been promoting and selling it as a spice for years. Despite this, the Central Government is not giving GI tag to our fenugreek as a spice, due to which both our farmers and traders are having to suffer.
It is noteworthy that across the country, paan methi is produced only in Nagaur. It is believed that the founder of MDH, Mr. Dharampal Gulati, had started its cultivation in Nagaur by bringing its seeds from Kasuri village in Sindh province of Punjab (presently in Pakistan) in the 70s. That is why its name became Kasuri Methi. The climate and soil of Nagaur remained suitable for it and its demand as a spice kept increasing. Presently it is known as ‘Nagauri Paan Methi’. Today the situation is such that more than 100 fenugreek processing units have been set up in Nagaur district, where every year thousands of tonnes of fenugreek is being packed in sacks and curtains and is going out.
Highest production in Nagaur
Experts say that Kasuri fenugreek may have been brought from Kasuri village of Sindh years ago, but at present it is mostly produced in some areas of Nagaur district only. It is being produced mostly in Nagaur, Khinvsar and Merta tehsils. The climate here is proving to be most suitable for this. Efforts were made to produce it at other places, but were not successful.
Now fenugreek processing units will increase further
Recently, in the investor meet organized in Nagaur, it was told that more than 100 units of fenugreek processing are operating in Nagaur. Experts say that now their number is expected to increase further. The reason for this is being considered to be 50 percent subsidy on setting up agro processing units in Rajasthan Investment Promotion Scheme-2024.
