Jaipur : Rajasthan drivers will now get relief from arbitrary collection of toll plazas. The Road Transport Ministry on Tuesday issued a notification amending its rules for the new fee collection system Global Navigation Satellite System. According to the department, Global Positioning System and On Board Unit will be used for fee collection in this satellite based system. With the increasing popularity of this new system, the time will come to bid farewell to the existing toll plazas. This system will be implemented initially on major highways and expressways. The government has amended the rules determining fee for highways for the new system. On the implementation of this system, passengers will have to pay the same amount as they have traveled, instead of the lump sum amount being collected in the current system.
At the same time, no fee will be charged from vehicles for the first 20 km journey. The new system will be an alternative to the existing Fastag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology. These revised rules are part of the government’s efforts to modernize toll collection on national highways through advanced technology.
Know, how will toll collection be done through GPS?
-GPS-based toll system uses satellite and in-car tracking systems to calculate toll based on the distance travelled.
-The new system eliminates the need for physical toll plazas for toll collection, thus preventing congestion at toll plazas.
-For the new system, vehicles will have to be fitted with an on-board unit (OBU) or tracking device. CCTV cameras installed on highways will confirm the position of vehicles. Fees will be levied based on that.
-NHAI will implement this system along with the existing Fastag setup. Separate GNSS lanes will be available at toll plazas so that vehicles equipped with the new system can pass without stopping.
