Lucknow, 19 December – The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly’s winter session begins today. opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, are preparing to corner the government on issues like codeine cough syrup smuggling, a special intensive revision campaign of the voter list (SIR), and discussions related to ‘Vande Mataram’. This raises concerns about possible disruptions in the proceedings.
After a holiday on Saturday and Sunday, the supplementary budget for the financial year 2025-26 will be presented on 22 December. On the same day, a five-hour discussion on ‘Vande Mataram’ is scheduled. Legislative work and debates will continue on 23 and 24 December.
To ensure the session runs smoothly and peacefully, a meeting of the all-party and working committee was held under the chairmanship of Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana. Leaders of all political parties assured that the proceedings would be conducted with decorum and parliamentary discipline.
Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana appealed to party leaders to make the house a platform for discussion and dialogue. He said that all members would be given ample opportunity to speak, provided the proceedings remain positive.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that detailed discussions would be held on the bills and important subjects presented during the session. He urged legislators to participate in constructive debates, emphasizing that public representatives are the first point of contact for addressing citizens’ problems.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said the government is fully prepared to respond seriously to every issue raised in the house. He requested party leaders to encourage their legislators to speak and actively participate in discussions.
Leader of the Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey expressed in the meeting that the opposition would strongly raise public interest issues in the house. Leaders from Apna Dal (Sonelal), Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, Nishad Party, Congress, Janata Loktantrik Dal, and BSP were present in the all-party meeting.
Under the chairmanship of the Assembly Speaker, a separate meeting of senior officials was held to discuss security and coordination arrangements during the session. Topics covered included security in the assembly premises, traffic management, inspection of visitors and vehicles, deployment of Quick Response Teams (QRT), availability of fire-fighting equipment and fire engines, and other safety measures.
