The popular Kachwaha dynasty of Rajputs ruled the regions of Jaipur and Amer for centuries. The city and the City Palace were founded by Sawai Jai Singh, who planned to shift his capital from Amer in the 17th century. And even today, the City Palace upholds the beauty and rich culture of Jaipur and the dynasties it has seen. One of the main reasons behind the decision to establish Jaipur and the City Palace was the difficulty in administering the growing population of Amer along with the lack of water and resources.
It was Man Singh II who ruled the City Palace and Jaipur at the time of India’s independence. The entire city was painted pink to welcome King Edward VII (then Prince of Wales) and some areas of the city remain so till date.
