Ajmer : The biggest reason for the spread of water hyacinth in Anasagar of Ajmer is the dirty water of drains discharged into Anasagar. Even though the administration claims to filter it in the sewerage plant, the reality is that there is no guarantee that the water pumped here will be filtered. Head of the Geography Department of Sophia College, Prof. This has come to light in the research done by Monica Kannan. This result was obtained by testing water and analyzing air pressure, temperature and humidity every month for about five months from January to May. Research revealed many reasons for this and the main reason among them was the presence of toxic waste in the water of Anasagar Lake.
Kanan said that somewhere the water in the drains was not filtered properly and this helped the water hyacinth to spread. Apart from this, the reason is the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture and the waste dumped from the surrounding areas. He also told that this water hyacinth came for the first time accidentally from the plants and started flourishing due to favorable conditions here. This research has been selected for the UGC Care Listed Journal Deccan Geographer, which is nationally recognized in the country for publication. It is a well received and prestigious magazine. In this research, data of temperature, air pressure and humidity was collected from IMD, New Delhi. The area of expansion and spread of water hyacinth was calculated using Google Earth Pro and ARCGIS.
This is why water hyacinth spread
The basic level of pH in water should be between 4 to 8, whereas the pH level of Anasagar water is more than 8. The turbidity of water should not be more than one, whereas the turbidity of Anasagar water is eight, which is due to the water being murky and dirty. Salinity is 1286 milligrams per liter, temperature is between 25 to 35 and phosphorus is between 0.5 to one, which is suitable for hyacinth.
This loss is happening
Due to the pollution of water and the spread of water hyacinth, the oxygen level of water is also decreasing. Due to this, aquatic animals and plants are also in danger. Due to water hyacinth, sun and water cannot come in contact and in such a situation evaporation also stopped. The amount of oxygen in water should be between 6.5 to 8. But here only 6 were found in the month of January, 4 in the month of February, 4 in the month of March, 4.5 in the month of April and 3 in the month of May. This is the reason why the migratory birds coming here also stayed away.
this is the solution
Mechanical Removal – Use the weed removal machine already purchased by Ajmer Municipal Corporation for regular removal of water hyacinth from the lake. Hire local workers to perform manual removal to address areas where machines cannot reach. Its growth is 7.26 percent per day and the speed should be faster than this.
Biological control – Introduce natural predators such as water hyacinth feeding weevils (Neochaetina eichhornia and Neochaetina bruchi) or specific fungi to reduce its growth without harming the ecosystem.
Chemical treatments – Use environmentally friendly herbicides (such as glyphosate) under controlled conditions to kill water hyacinth. It should be applied carefully to avoid harming other aquatic life.
Other – Check nutrient runoff: Reduce nutrient-rich wastewater and agricultural runoff into the lake. Create wetland buffers. Create artificial wetland around the lake. Tell people about the ecological damage caused by water hyacinth and encourage participation in clean-up campaigns.
