What is the ‘rat-hole mining’ technique due to which Aryan of Dausa is struggling to get it out of the borewell?

Dausa : 5 year old Aryan is trapped in a borewell for 43 hours in Kalikhad village of Dausa district of Rajasthan. NDRF and SDRF teams have tried 6 times to save him, but till now they have not been successful. Excavation work using 10 JCBs and other machines has also not shown much effect. The rescue teams also made an iron ‘chakra’, after which an iron ring was placed to prevent the child from going down. Despite many efforts, success has not been achieved yet. In such a situation, NDRF has now decided to make a big hole through piling machines. This hole is being drilled since 5 in the morning. According to officials, the 155 feet hole will be made at a distance of 6 feet from the borewell. After that, through ‘rat-hole mining’, the place where the child is trapped will be reached below the borewell with the help of a pipe. Till now about 110 feet hole has been made. Let us understand what is ‘rat-hole mining’, with the help of which technique the struggle to save Aryan is going on.

What is ‘rat-hole mining’ technique?

‘Rat-hole mining’ is a type of mining method, through which very narrow and deep tunnels are made in the mines, which look like the holes of rats, hence it is called ‘rat-hole mining’. Only one person can go inside these tunnels, this method is usually adopted for extracting coal. In ‘rat-hole mining’ workers have to work without safety equipment, which puts their lives at risk. The walls of the tunnels are weak and there is a danger of landslides. However, it is also sometimes used for illegal coal extraction. There is a danger of getting trapped inside the mine. That’s why the government has banned it.

What did Dausa Collector say?

Dausa District Collector Devendra Yadav said that some challenges were encountered in the operation to take Aryan out of the borewell. Since the water level in the borewell has not increased, other nearby borewells have been made operational. At present, Aryan is stuck three to four feet above the water in the borewell. He said that digging is going on with the piling machine as part of the operation. After excavation, pipes will be inserted, and after this the NDRF team will go inside through the capsule. Also, a parallel tunnel will be built, so that Aryan can be taken out safely.
