Jaipur : Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated exactly 20 days after Dussehra, but a day before that, on Dhanteras, it is customary to worship Kuber, the god of wealth, in homes. Every year the festival of Dhanteras is celebrated on the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. On this day, Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi are worshiped in homes along with Kuber, the god of wealth. It is believed that by worshiping Lord Dhanvantari on this day, a person gets good health and by worshiping Goddess Lakshmi and Kuber, one gets wealth.

Auspicious time for worship on Dhanteras
On the day of Dhanteras (Dhanteras 2024 shubh muhurat), install a photo or idol of Goddess Lakshmi and God of wealth Kuber along with Dhanvantari Dev at your place of worship. After this worship Kuber and Dhanvantari Dev. Then light a ghee lamp in front of them and in the evening also light a lamp at the door. On the day of Dhanteras, offer yellow sweets as Prasad to Dhanvantari Dev. After this perform aarti of the gods.
What to buy on Dhanteras?
There is also a tradition of buying new things on the day of Dhanteras. It is said that on this day it is very auspicious to buy new things like gold, silver, clothes, vehicles, utensils and other things.
Why is Dhanteras celebrated
Dhanteras is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari. According to the scriptures, on this day Lord Dhanvantari appeared during the churning of the ocean with a golden pot filled with nectar in his hands. Lord Dhanvantari made the gods immortal by making them drink the nectar filled in the pot.
