The festival of Diwali was first celebrated when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. That day was the new moon day of Kartik month and the townspeople celebrated the return of their Lord Shri Ram to Ayodhya by lighting ghee lamps. This year, the Amavasya of Kartik month will start on 31st October at 3.52 pm and will continue till 6 pm the next day i.e. 1st November. Therefore, Amavasya Tithi will remain valid on both the days. Since Diwali worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Kali is done after Pradosh period, hence Diwali worship will be done on 31st October and lamps will be lit in the house on the same day. Those who worship Kali on Diwali will also celebrate Diwali at their home on 31st October and will worship Goddess Kali on the same day.
Apart from this, those who donate, bathe and do other worship on Amavasya Tithi should do these things on 1st November. As far as celebrating Diwali is concerned, it would be logical to celebrate this festival on 31st October only. Apart from this, according to Vaidehi, Rishikesh and University Almanac, the festival of Diwali should be celebrated unanimously on 31st October.
When is Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali, Govardhan and Bhai Dooj? The celebration of Diwali starts from the day of Dhanteras and this year Dhanteras will be celebrated on 29th October. Apart from purchasing gold and silver on this day, buying a broom and bringing it home is also considered very auspicious. Chhoti Diwali will be celebrated the next day on 30th October. Then Big Diwali will be celebrated on 31st October. After this, Govardhan Puja will be held on 2nd November and Bhai Dooj will be celebrated the next day on 3rd November.
