To solve the dilemma in your mind regarding the date of Diwali, we are giving you information by talking to experienced and learned astrologers and leading astrology and Sanskrit institutions across the country.

In Sanatan Dharma, dates and fasts and festivals are calculated on the basis of Vedic calendar. According to the Panchang, the festival of lights, Diwali, is celebrated every year on the Amavasya Tithi of Kartik month, but this time the Amavasya Tithi is two days away due to which there is confusion regarding the date of Diwali. Dates have special significance in Hindu religion and Udaya Tithi has even more importance among them. In Hindu religion, fasts and festivals are celebrated only on the basis of Udaya Tithi. Udaya Tithi means that the date which occurs at the time of sunrise is given importance. In this way, some people are considering it better to celebrate Diwali on 1st November by giving importance to Udaya Tithi. Some people argue that Lakshmi Puja on Diwali is always celebrated during Kartik Amavasya falling between Pradosh Kaal and midnight, hence Diwali should be celebrated on 31st October only. Let us put both these arguments under the test of the rules of astrology and Muhurat Shastra.

What are the rules of Vedic scriptures
In the scriptures, it is prescribed to worship Lakshmi on Diwali always on Amavasya Tithi and Pradosh Kaal i.e. from after sunset till late night, that is, it is considered auspicious to celebrate Diwali on Amavasya Tithi, Pradosh Kaal and Nishita Kaal. For this reason, most of the pundits and scholars of astrology believe that on the day of Amavasya of Kartik month, worshiping Lakshmi from Pradosh Kaal till midnight and celebrating Diwali is more auspicious and according to the scriptures. In fact, there is a religious belief that Goddess Lakshmi appeared during the Pradosh period, due to which worshiping Goddess Lakshmi and doing all kinds of sadhanas related to her during the Nishith period is of special importance.

According to the Vedic calendar, this year Amavasya Tithi will start on 31st October at 3.12 pm, which will last till the evening of 01st November. In this way, all the Vedic conditions on Diwali will be applicable on 31st October, whereas on 01st November 2024, Amavasya Tithi will be during sunrise but will end at 06.16 in the evening.

On the other hand, in some almanacs, the end of Amavasya Tithi is being said before sunset. In most of the cases, Udaya Tithi is given special importance regarding the dates of fasts and festivals, but in some special circumstances, keeping in mind other things and auspicious times, the date of arrival is given more importance. For this reason, keeping in mind the Amavasya Tithi which prevails between Pradosh Kaal and midnight, most of the scholars and pundits are advising to celebrate the festival of Diwali on 31st October. Celebrate Diwali on 31st October with this type of Lakshmi puja.
