Why was special voting held before ‘general elections’?

Accra, December 3 (IANS). Voting took place at selected polling stations across Ghana for special voting ahead of the ‘General Elections’ in Ghana. On December 7, voters in Ghana will head to the polls to elect a new president and 276 members of parliament.

People, including security personnel, journalists, Election Commission officials and civil society activists, who are not allowed to leave polling stations during the main elections, were allowed to vote through special voting early in the morning on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported. Will perform his duties away.

According to the Election Commission (EC), about 1,31,478 persons, which is 0.007 per cent of registered voters, were eligible to cast their votes in the remaining polls.

Genetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the sitting MP for Korle-Klote constituency, told Xinhua that the special voting process went smoothly throughout the morning.

Agyeman-Rawlings said, “Voting began on time and there were no disruptions. If what we are seeing today is repeated on December 7, people will be inclined to accept the result. For that to happen, The Election Commission should play the role of a neutral referee.”

At the Legon Police Station polling station in Ayawaso West Wugon constituency, Municipal Electoral Officer Lydia Egiri expressed satisfaction over the smooth process. He told Xinhua that all biometric machines, including verification devices, were fully functioning and voters were presenting themselves correctly.

According to the Election Commission, special voting for the Western Region and Eastern Region was postponed to 5 December because some ballot papers were exposed prematurely.
