Lahore, November 23 (IANS). Lahore, the provincial capital of Pakistan’s largest province Punjab, remains the most polluted city in the world. Light rain occurred on Saturday morning, giving hope for some improvement in the severe air quality and smog conditions that have been prevailing in the area for several weeks. However, according to the Meteorological Department, there is no possibility of any major relief from drizzle.
The maximum temperature of Lahore is expected to be around 24 and minimum temperature will be around 14 degree Celsius.
Pakistan Meteorological Department said that ‘Eastern winds are bringing pollution in Pakistan, due to which the smog is increasing. Due to this, the already poor air quality is getting worse.
Air quality remains severe in many areas of the city including Gulberg, Ferozepur Road, Canal Road, Thokar Niaz Beg and Johar Town.
According to the ‘International Air Monitor’, Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) was recorded at a hazardous level of 404, while the AQI of various areas of the city remained at severe level.
Gulberg’s AQI was 529, FC College 495, Valencia Town 483, Defense Phase 5 465, Garden Town 433, Wapda Town 412, Ferozepur Road 412, Shimla Hills 404 and Johar Town and Township 372. .
Although the Punjab government announced the reopening of educational institutions and relaxation in timings of markets, it has been forced to re-impose restrictions in various cities including Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad and Gujranwala. As per the restrictions imposed, markets, except bakeries and pharmacies, will have to be closed by 8 pm on weekends.
Air pollution during winter is caused by dust in the cold air, vehicular emissions and stubble burning by farmers, leading to a sharp decline in air quality.
Environmental experts have asked citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities. They say the concentration of harmful chemical substances in the air is at least 55 times higher than the safety levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
