According to an ancient story, once Lord Yamraj, the god of death, asked his messengers of death whether they ever felt pity for taking the life of a human being. On this question Yamdoot answers that no Maharaj, we do not feel pity, we only follow the innocents. Yet Yamraj asked again, tell me the truth, have you ever felt pity for taking the life of any human being? After that a Yamdoot answers this and says that this happened once. Seeing whom I felt a feeling of pity. Once a king named Hans went to the forest for hunting and lost his way. While wandering, the king reached someone else’s border. A ruler named Hema ruled there. He honored him. The same day the king’s wife gave birth to a beautiful child.

On the basis of the horoscope of that child, it was told that this child would die only four days after his marriage. Then the king ordered everyone to keep this child in a cave near Yamuna in the guise of a celibate. Even a woman’s shadow should not fall at that place, but as per the law, something else had to be done. Neeti, the daughter of King Hans, went to the banks of Yamuna and was mesmerized after seeing the king’s son. At that very moment both of them got married in Gandharva marriage. The king’s son died four days after their marriage.

Yamdoot said that his heart ached after hearing the pitiful lamentation of that newly married woman. After listening to all the things, Yamraj said that what can we do in this, it is a rule of law. We will have to do this work. The Yamdoots prayed to Yamraj that there is some solution by which untimely death can be avoided. Then Yamraj said that on the day of Dhanteras, there is no fear of untimely death by worshiping and donating lamps as per the rituals.

According to the legend, Lord Dhanvantari was born on the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. During the churning of the ocean, Lord Dhanvantari appeared with a pot of nectar.
