Sudan: 15 killed, 20 injured in alleged attack by paramilitary forces; howitzers were used

Khartoum, 24 November (IANS). At least 15 civilians have been killed and 20 others injured in an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in western Sudan. The Sixth Infantry Division of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) gave this information on Sunday.

RSF militia attacked the Naivasha market in Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur province, with three howitzers on Saturday evening, the division said in a statement.

The division accused the RSF of systematically targeting civilians by shelling markets and meeting places. However, RSF has not yet commented on the alleged attack.

According to Xinhua news agency, violent clashes have been going on between the SAF and the RSF in Al Fasher since May 10.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been in the grip of a devastating conflict between rival forces SAF and RSF. According to the latest update of the ‘Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project’, more than 27,120 people have died so far in this deadly conflict.

According to the latest estimates from the International Organization for Migration, the conflict has displaced more than 14 million people into or out of Sudan.

Earlier, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) had announced the arrival of an aid convoy to the Zamzam refugee camp in North Darfur state in western Sudan. This is the first aid convoy that has arrived here since August.

WFP issued a statement saying the first food aid convoy arrived in Zamzam camp in North Darfur on Friday, while other convoys were heading to other hard-to-reach areas.

The statement said it was the first convoy to reach the camp in Zamzam, North Darfur, since famine was confirmed in August.

More than 700 trucks carrying WFP food aid have departed across Sudan, according to the statement. WFP has classified 14 places as hotspots due to the severity of food insecurity and famine risk in their respective regions.
