70-Year-Old Man Arrested for Rape and Murder of Minor Granddaughter in Tripura

Agartala, May 3: Authorities reported on Sunday that a 70-year-old man has been arrested in Tripura for allegedly raping and murdering his minor granddaughter.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha directed the police to take strict measures to ensure the accused receives the harshest punishment possible. In a social media post, he expressed concern over the unnatural death of a 10th-grade student from Chandamura village in the Sonamura sub-division of Sipahijala district. Local MLA and Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman spoke to residents of the area, describing the incident as extremely heartbreaking and tragic. Based on initial investigations, the police have already arrested two individuals.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the administration is committed to identifying the culprits through a fair and thorough investigation and ensuring they face severe consequences.

A police officer revealed that the accused, Pran Ballabh Das, was arrested on Saturday after the girl’s body was discovered at their home. The arrest followed a complaint filed by the victim’s father, Bapi Das.

According to neighbors, the victim had been living with her grandparents, as her father, who works for a private security agency in Bengaluru, remarried after the death of his wife. Allegations suggest that the victim was repeatedly sexually abused by her grandfather. Bapi Das returned home upon hearing the news of his daughter’s death.

Bapi Das and local residents have demanded the death penalty for the accused, stating that such heinous crimes should have no place in society.

The police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and the post-mortem report is expected on Monday, which may provide further clarity on the case.
