Anemia Hinders Childrens Development: Prevention Tips

New Delhi, May 20: Ensuring the health and activity of children is a top priority for every parent, but iron deficiency can severely impact their development. According to the National Health Mission, anemia in children under two years can affect brain development and learning abilities. Therefore, it is crucial to provide balanced and nutritious meals on time.

Health experts believe that proper nutrition during childhood leads to better physical and mental development. In contrast, a lack of iron can make children weak, lethargic, and less active. Prolonged anemia can negatively affect memory, learning capacity, and mental growth in children.

The National Health Mission (NHM) recommends incorporating iron-rich foods into children’s daily diets to prevent anemia. Foods such as leafy green vegetables, lentils, chickpeas, jaggery, pomegranates, and dates are essential. Additionally, fruits rich in vitamin C, like oranges, amla, and lemons, help enhance iron absorption in the body.

Experts advise that complementary feeding should begin for children after six months of age. A nutritious diet alongside breastfeeding helps provide essential nutrition. Balanced meals also strengthen children’s immunity, keeping them healthier.

Moreover, the NHM emphasizes that children aged 6 to 59 months should receive iron and folic acid (IFA) syrup supplements as per medical advice. This is effective in addressing iron deficiency and preventing anemia.

It is vital to pay attention to children’s diets from an early age, as proper nutrition and regular care can protect them from issues like anemia.
