Ranchi, 5 December (IANS). An attempt was made to rape a student in broad daylight at the Jharkhand Central University campus in Brambe, Ranchi. The incident is said to have happened at 1.30 pm on December 4. The student was going to the hostel. Meanwhile, on the way, four students of the university surrounded her and tried to rape her. The student started making noise. After this the accused snatched away the student’s mobile phone. Somehow the student reached the hostel.
The student studying in first year B.Ed informed the university management about the incident. But, the management tried to suppress it. However, at present no complaint has been lodged with the police regarding the incident.
Angered by this incident, students protested heavily on the campus on Thursday and raised slogans against the university administration. The protesting students were demanding immediate arrest of the accused. The protesting students allege that the university administration is trying to suppress the matter and protect the accused students.
On receiving information about the incident, the police of the concerned police station also reached the campus. The victim student has also filed an online complaint regarding sexual harassment and attempted rape, tagging all officials related to the university administration, including the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of CUJ. She has said that she can identify all the four accused students.
The student has alleged in her complaint letter that due to this incident all of us students are feeling unsafe inside and outside the CUJ campus. The girl students have urged the Central University administration that their safety should be ensured. The entire campus and all departments should be brought under CCTV coverage. University administration officials were contacted regarding this incident, but their response could not be found.
