New Delhi, May 4: The Indian Navy‘s submarine INS Sindhukesari has arrived in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This voyage is a significant indication of the growing maritime cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. The mission aims to enhance security, stability, and mutual trust in the Indian Ocean region.
According to the Indian Navy, this visit is specifically designed to improve coordination, operational capabilities, and collaboration between the navies of both countries. Upon arrival in Colombo, the submarine and its crew were welcomed in a traditional and formal manner by Sri Lankan naval officials. The Indian Defence Advisor to Sri Lanka was also present, emphasizing the strengthening of defence relations between the two nations.
Such cooperation is considered extremely important in the changing landscape of maritime security, as it helps maintain peace and balance in the region. Various professional and strategic activities were organized following the submarine’s arrival. These activities aimed to enhance the exchange of experiences and joint operational capabilities between the navies of India and Sri Lanka, ensuring better coordination during any future emergencies or joint missions.
Defence experts believe that maritime cooperation between India and Sri Lanka is continuously strengthening. Both countries are reinforcing their defence ties through regular joint exercises, training, and high-level visits. Such visits not only enhance military collaboration but also elevate mutual trust and strategic partnerships to new heights. According to experts, initiatives like these play a crucial role in strengthening the regional security framework amid rising challenges in the Indian Ocean region.
The visit of INS Sindhukesari is seen as a significant step in this direction. Prior to its arrival in Sri Lanka, the Indian and Sri Lankan navies conducted a joint diving exercise. This was the fourth edition of the India-Sri Lanka DiveEx exercise, which took place in Colombo from April 21 to 28, 2026, involving the Indian Navy’s special vessel INS Inspector, known for deep-sea diving and submarine rescue operations.
Additionally, both countries’ naval diving teams practiced together, enhancing mutual coordination and professional understanding. The exercise focused particularly on complex underwater operations, including advanced deep-sea diving training and mixed gas diving, with practice conducted in both port and open sea environments. Notably, naval divers conducted exercises near the wrecks of World War-era ships SS Worcester and SS Perseus.
