Italian citizen caught at Sydney airport on drug smuggling charges may face life imprisonment

Sydney, 22 November (IANS). An Italian man living in Australia could be sentenced to life in prison for drug trafficking.

Authorities at Sydney Airport reportedly found 15 kilograms of methamphetamine in the luggage of an 18-year-old Italian man, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Border Force (ABF) said in a statement on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported. After which this action has been taken against him. That person has been presented in the court as an accused in a drug case.

He said ABF officers checked the man’s luggage when he arrived in Sydney on Wednesday after flying from Europe.

Officers reportedly found packets of a white substance hidden in large black plastic packets in the man’s suitcase. Initial investigation revealed that the substance was methamphetamine. This drug is controlled in Australia.

AFP arrested the man for importing commercial quantities of the border-controlled drug. If he is found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

According to authorities, this amount of methamphetamine could have led to up to 150,000 deals, with an estimated street value of 13 million Australian dollars (about $8.4 million).
