Jodhpur: Bacteria found in soil are making people sick, AIIMS starts investigation

Jodhpur : Jodhpur These days, patients of myelodosis, a serious disease found in some parts of Asia, Australia and India, are also being found in Jodhpur. In the last one and a half years, four patients have been found in Jodhpur, out of which one died and one patient is currently under treatment. In the absence of proper treatment, the mortality rate of this disease ranges from 16 to 50%. This rare disease is found in the soil, in which the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei enters the body through inhalation and causes the disease.

In view of this disease, PCR testing of myeliosis has started in the Microbiology Department of AIIMS Jodhpur from last October. In entire Rajasthan, its investigation is done only in AIIMS Jodhpur. This disease enters the body through inhalation of the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei found in the soil. Dr. Vibhor Tak, Additional Professor, Department of Microbiology, AIIMS Jodhpur, says that sometimes it can enter the body through injuries and cut skin even by coming in contact with infected soil. In most patients, pneumonia occurs with fever, shortness of breath and cough. In the absence of proper treatment, this disease can cause pus in any other organs like liver, spleen and bones through blood flow. If not given proper treatment, it can even be fatal.

According to Dr. Tak, good results of this disease are possible with early diagnosis and proper and complete treatment for 2 months. So far, four patients of this disease have been found in AIIMS Jodhpur. Of these, two are residents of Jodhpur, one of Jalore and one of Pali. Two patients have recovered and been discharged from AIIMS. One patient is under treatment and a woman has already died. All these patients were admitted with respiratory pneumonia.
