Security forces destroyed 12 drugs labs in western Afghanistan

Kabul, December 1 (IANS). Afghan security forces destroyed 12 covert drugs processing labs in Ghor province in western Afghanistan. They set fire to 46,000 kilograms of illegal drugs. This information was given in a statement by the office of the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs on Sunday.

The statement said police have launched separate operations against drugs in the outskirts of Firoz Koah city, the provincial capital, Xinhua news agency reported. In this operation, 11 drugs processing labs were destroyed and 46,000 kg of illegal drugs were burnt.

Without elaborating on whether anyone was arrested for their involvement in the case, the statement said the destroyed drugs were used to make heroin.

Media reports claim that more than 30 lakh people use drugs in Afghanistan. The Afghan caretaker government has vowed to crack down on opium cultivation, processing and drug smuggling until the war-ravaged country rids itself of the menace.

Earlier on Wednesday, a statement was issued by the office of the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs. It was reported that after treatment at a rehabilitation center in Kandahar province of Afghanistan, at least 450 people who consumed drugs completely recovered and all returned to their homes.
