New Delhi, May 29: Following the resignation of Siddaramaiah as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge has commended his contributions to public life. Kharge shared a photo with Siddaramaiah on X, stating, “Siddaramaiah has exemplified dignity, compassion, and a deep commitment to social justice throughout his public life.”
Kharge further noted, “From humble beginnings to serving as Chief Minister of Karnataka twice, Siddaramaiah has remained dedicated to equality, harmony, and the welfare of marginalized communities. Karnataka and the Congress party are grateful for his contributions to public life. We wish him good health and continued service to the people.”
Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation on May 28, which was accepted on Friday by Governor Thawarchand Gehlot, who exercised powers under Article 164(1) of the Constitution. In a letter to Siddaramaiah, Gehlot stated, “I have accepted your resignation with immediate effect. Until an alternative arrangement is made, you will continue to serve as the caretaker Chief Minister.”
Earlier, after submitting his resignation on Thursday, Siddaramaiah mentioned that the decision regarding the next Chief Minister would be made by the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) and the party high command. He clarified that his resignation was entirely voluntary and that he faced no pressure. During discussions with the Congress high command in Delhi, he was offered a role in national politics and a position in the Rajya Sabha, which he humbly declined.
“I told the high command that I have no interest in national politics. I want to remain active in Karnataka politics. The public has elected me for five years, and I have two years left in my term. Until then, I will continue to serve the people of the state,” Siddaramaiah stated.
He added, “I will remain active in politics. I have voluntarily resigned. The next Chief Minister will be chosen by the legislative party and approved by the high command.”
