South Korea passes bill on North Korean garbage balloons

Seoul, November 14 (IANS). The South Korean National Assembly passed an amended bill on Thursday. The bill provides for state compensation for people who suffer harm caused by North Korea’s garbage-filled balloons.

During the parliamentary plenary, the ruling and opposition parties voted to amend the Framework Act on Civil Defense, Yonhap news agency reported. The amended bill is expected to come into effect six months from now.

North Korea began releasing garbage-filled balloons into South Korea in late May in protest against anti-Pyongyang leaflets sent across the border by North Korean defectors and activists. Thousands of balloons have been released by North Korea so far this year.

Tension has increased significantly in the Korean Peninsula for some time. North Korea is continuously adopting an aggressive stance. At the same time, the issue of alleged deployment of Pyongyang’s troops in Russia is also a hot topic.

Earlier, South Korea’s army said that North Korea jammed GPS signals for the fifth consecutive day on Tuesday. It is believed that the latest jamming attack may have some connection with North Korea’s military training.

Yonhap news agency quoted South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) as saying that North Korea had recently resumed jamming. Earlier, between May 29 and June 2, North Korea had carried out several jamming attacks near the northwestern border islands.

“The GPS signal was jammed in some areas today. The incident occurred in the western border islands. The signal suddenly became weak in the morning,” JCS spokesman Colonel Lee Sung-jun told a regular press briefing.

“Compared with jamming attacks targeting the South earlier this year, the GPS jamming this month may be part of North Korea’s military training to respond to drones,” Lee said. Is.

Meanwhile, the issue of North Korean soldiers in Russia is also creating tension for North Korea and America. Both Seoul and Washington claim that North Korean troops have begun fighting against Japanese forces in the Kursk region in western Russia.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said Seoul is ready to provide more support to Kiev if North Korea’s involvement in supporting Russia in the Ukraine war continues.

Yoon made the comments in a written interview with Spanish news agency EFE. He gave this interview before traveling to South America for the ‘Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’ (APEC) summit in Peru and the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Brazil.
