
Mau, April 25: A devastating road accident occurred late Saturday night in Mau district, Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. The incident took place on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi four-lane highway near Kusumha Basharatpur in the Doharighat police station area.
According to reports, a speeding Scorpio lost control, first crashing into a divider before colliding head-on with a trailer in the opposite lane. Circle Officer Jitendra Singh informed that the police received news of the accident late at night and promptly dispatched a team to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered that one vehicle had veered into the opposite lane after hitting the divider, leading to a direct collision with an oncoming vehicle.
The police team, along with local residents and rescue personnel, initiated recovery operations. It took considerable time to extricate the victims from the wreckage due to the severity of the crash. After approximately two and a half hours of intense effort, all five individuals were retrieved, but unfortunately, they had already succumbed to their injuries.
Reports indicate that the victims, residents of Gorakhpur, were returning home with their family after attending a wedding in Ranchi, Jharkhand. The accident occurred between 2:30 and 3:00 AM when the driver reportedly dozed off, causing the Scorpio to veer off course. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was completely mangled, trapping all occupants inside.
Following the incident, the Doharighat police arrived promptly, and rescue operations commenced with the assistance of local residents. The deceased were sent to the district hospital for post-mortem examinations. The accident has cast a pall of grief over the area and the victims’ village. The identities of the deceased have been confirmed, and their families have been notified. All bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and legal proceedings are underway. Meanwhile, traffic has been restored after the wrecked vehicles were cleared from the site.
