Why were Sheikh Hasina’s speeches banned in Bangladesh?

Dhaka, December 5 (IANS). A domestic war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh on Thursday ordered that recent comments made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina be removed from all social media platforms in the country with immediate effect. This tribunal was established by the Sheikh Hasina-led government.

According to local media, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) prosecutor Ghulam Monwar Hossain Tamim said Hasina’s speech and phone conversation were leaked on social and electronic media, leading to the investigation launched against her by the interim government. The process may be hindered.

The tribunal headed by Justice Mohammad Golam Murtuza directed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to remove the current and past instances of such speeches by Hasina from all platforms.

Prosecutor Abdullah Al Noman said, “We will ensure that the tribunal’s order is communicated in writing to the relevant authorities of international platforms such as Facebook, X and YouTube.”

Noman had filed a petition demanding a ban on the speeches of the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Hasina made these remarks while virtually addressing an Awami League event in New York earlier this week.

Hasina had sharply criticized Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, for allegedly targeting Hindu temples and other religious sites of minorities, including ISKCON sites in Bangladesh.

The former PM had said, “Today I have been accused of mass murders. In fact, it is Mohammad Yunus who, along with his student coordinator, is responsible for the mass murders under a well-planned plan. He is the mastermind. ” This speech had gone viral on social media.

Bangladesh Awami League (AL) president and daughter of ‘Father of the Nation’ Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said, “Teachers and police are being attacked and murdered. Hindus, Christians and Buddhists are being attacked “Many churches and temples are being targeted. Why are minorities being attacked?”

The interim government of Bangladesh has been accused of discriminating against minorities and not providing adequate security to them, their homes and religious places.

After the arrest of priest Chinmoy Krishna Das, the world has once again paid attention to these allegations. Krishna Das was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka when he was on his way to Chittagong to participate in a rally. Last week the court refused to grant him bail and sent him to jail.

Sheikh Hasina condemned the arrest and demanded the immediate release of the priest.

Let us tell you that on August 5 this year, Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave power and flee the country. After this, there are continuous reports of attacks on minority sections in the country. Minority religious places have also been targeted.
