Guwahati, May 30: Assam Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Dilip Saikia stated on Saturday that the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a significant step towards delivering justice for women.
Speaking to a news agency, Saikia reminded that the NDA, led by the BJP, had promised to implement the UCC if the party returned to power in the state. He noted that all parties were given an opportunity to express their opinions, and after appropriate discussions, the UCC was passed in the Assam Assembly.
Saikia emphasized that the UCC signifies “one nation, one law, and one identity for all religions and communities.” He assured that the diverse culture and traditions of the country would be preserved.
Quoting the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Syama Prasad Mukherjee, Saikia stated, “There cannot be two constitutions, two prime ministers, and two flags in one country,” indicating that the process of implementing a uniform personal law is underway.
He highlighted the importance of passing this bill for the nation, asserting that the UCC would be a major step towards ensuring justice for women. The bill also aims to ensure that all citizens receive justice under the same law.
The proposed law seeks to establish a uniform civil framework for matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession, and live-in relationships, regardless of religion. It also proposes to ban polygamy and make the registration of live-in relationships mandatory. However, opposition parties and various organizations have expressed concerns over some provisions and exemptions in this law.
Welcoming the passage of the UCC Bill, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal stated that it would usher in a new era of social justice, equality, and good governance in the state.
