Beijing is leveraging the United States’ preoccupation with crises in Venezuela and Iran to strengthen its strategic influence globally, according to a report by European Times.
The report states that China is presenting itself as a “stability provider” through economic partnerships rather than military intervention. However, questions remain regarding the credibility of this claim.
China’s close ties with governments like Nicolás Maduro’s in Venezuela and Iran’s hardline leadership could undermine its image as a stabilising force. Furthermore, China’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan and Tibet contradict its non-intervention rhetoric, causing many countries to remain cautious and view China’s strategy as a form of expansionism.
“While Washington is grappling with multiple crises in Venezuela and Iran simultaneously, Beijing sees an opportunity to reposition itself as a stabilising power in global affairs. This is not mere opportunism but part of China’s long-term strategy to reshape international norms,” the report explains.
The report also highlights that US involvement in Venezuela reflects its efforts to maintain dominance in the Western Hemisphere. Meanwhile, China is expanding its influence in Latin America and the Caribbean through the China-CELAC forum by providing infrastructure and investment without political conditions.
Regarding Iran, the report notes that the country remains crucial for China’s energy security. Despite sanctions, China’s continued trade with Iran presents it as a reliable partner in contrast to America’s punitive policies.
China’s current approach is reminiscent of historical periods when emerging powers capitalised on US distractions to advance their own interests.
