New Delhi, April 5: Pregnancy is a significant phase in every woman’s life, but the bodily changes that occur can lead to various issues. One common problem faced during this time is indigestion, heaviness in the stomach, and loss of appetite.
Due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, the digestive process slows down, leading to increased issues like gas, acidity, and nausea. Both Ayurveda and modern science suggest that dietary adjustments and natural remedies can significantly alleviate these problems.
In Ayurveda, fennel is considered highly beneficial for digestion. The natural oils and fiber in fennel help relax the stomach muscles and reduce gas formation. Fennel possesses anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties, which aid in relieving cramps and heaviness in the stomach. Drinking fennel boiled in water allows its properties to dissolve more easily in the body, soothing the digestive system. This is why consuming a small amount of fennel after meals can lighten the stomach and reduce indigestion.
Ginger is also regarded as highly effective for nausea and indigestion during pregnancy. In Ayurveda, ginger is termed a “great medicine” as it strengthens digestive fire. Scientific studies indicate that ginger contains compounds like gingerol and shogaol, which help balance stomach acid and relieve feelings of nausea. When combined with lemon, ginger becomes even more effective. Lemon, rich in vitamin C and natural acids, activates digestive juices and aids in quicker digestion. Consuming this mixture with warm water helps keep the stomach light and gradually increases appetite.
Coconut water is also considered very beneficial during this time. According to Ayurveda, it cools the body and balances the pitta dosha, which tends to increase during pregnancy and can lead to acidity. Coconut water contains electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, which keep the body hydrated and soothe stomach irritation. When the body is well-hydrated, the digestive process functions more effectively, reducing the chances of indigestion. Regular consumption of fresh coconut water also helps maintain energy levels in the body.
