Focus on Diverse Sports Essential, Says Raksha Khadse

New Delhi, March 13: Raksha Khadse, the Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, emphasized the importance of giving due recognition to sports other than cricket and strengthening grassroots talent. Speaking at the inauguration of a four-day conference hosted by the Delhi Sports Journalists Association (DSJA), Khadse highlighted that sports journalism serves as a vital voice that transforms sports into stories.

In a post on her social media account ‘X’, she stated, “Sports journalism is the voice that turns sports into narratives, athletes into icons, and sports into a source of national pride. I had the honor of addressing the SJFI Convention 2026, a historic gathering in the sports media world held after 23 years. Alongside me were Hari Ranjan Rao, Secretary (Sports), and Sarju Chakraborty, Director General of the Sports Authority of India, as well as Ramesh V, Secretary of the Sports Journalists Federation of India.”

Khadse further stressed the need to spotlight government initiatives, promote sports tourism, and open career paths in emerging fields like sports science. She underscored the role of journalism as the fourth pillar of democracy in advancing social welfare and noted that sports media plays a crucial role in showcasing India’s ‘soft power’ globally. Gender disparity in sports journalism was another significant issue she raised, advocating for greater participation of women in this field. She expressed heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering support of sports journalists, whose dedication strengthens the entire sports ecosystem.

The event commenced with a traditional lamp lighting ceremony, followed by the honoring of key guests and collaborators. DSJA President Abhishek Tripathi presented an award to Raksha Khadse, while Secretary Sabi Hussain honored Hari Ranjan Rao. Khadse also recognized the leadership of the SJFI and state presidents and secretaries of affiliated sports journalist associations from across the country.

The evening’s highlight was the unveiling of the JK Bose Inter-Zonal T20 Cricket Trophy and the AC Bali Table Tennis Trophy, marking the formal commencement of the conference’s sports competitions. The draw for the JK Bose Inter-Zonal T20 Cricket Tournament was also conducted, featuring two matches: South vs East and West vs North.
