Srinagar, March 11: A gunfire incident occurred during an event in Jammu and Kashmir, where former Chief Minister and National Conference President Farooq Abdullah was present. Reports indicate that Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary were attending the program when the shooting took place. Fortunately, both individuals are safe.
A suspect has been taken into custody by the police, who are currently interrogating him and investigating the matter. Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah’s son and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, took to social media platform ‘X’ to express gratitude, stating that “Allah is merciful; my father narrowly escaped.” He noted that details are still emerging but confirmed that an individual approached very closely with a loaded pistol and fired.
Omar Abdullah further questioned how someone could get so close to a former Chief Minister who is protected by the National Security Guard (NSG). National Conference legislator Tanveer Sadiq also posted on social media that he has spoken with Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder, and Nasir Aslam Wani, confirming they are safe and healthy.
Following the shooting, several senior police officials arrived at Farooq Abdullah’s residence, where heavy police deployment has been established as the investigation continues. However, it remains unclear who the intended target of the attack was and the motive behind it.
A CCTV video of the incident shows the assailant firing from very close range, with security personnel quickly subduing him. No official statement has been released by the police regarding the incident.
