Chennai, February 17: The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has issued a warning predicting heavy rainfall in at least ten districts of Tamil Nadu on February 21, due to a low-pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal. According to the weather department, the low-pressure system is developing around the west-central Bay of Bengal and the eastern Indian Ocean, gradually gaining strength.
The weather department indicated that dry weather is expected across Tamil Nadu until February 18, but a change in weather patterns will begin thereafter. Light to moderate rainfall is anticipated in the southern coastal districts and some areas of the delta region on February 19.
As the system strengthens on February 20, moderate rainfall is forecasted for several parts of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. On February 21, heavy rainfall is expected in the delta regions, including Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Pudukkottai districts. Additionally, there is a possibility of heavy rain at isolated locations in the southern Tamil Nadu districts of Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi.
On February 22, heavy rainfall with thunderstorms is predicted for the districts of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari. Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution, especially in the southern coastal areas, as sea conditions may deteriorate depending on the system’s intensity. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been urged to remain vigilant and follow the directives of local authorities. Officials are continuously monitoring the situation.
