Udaipur, March 31: Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Tuesday that India is expected to have four semiconductor plants operational by 2026. This statement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the OSAT plant of Kaynes Semiconductor in Sanand.
Vaishnaw stated, “By 2026, four semiconductor plants will be ready, and two more will be completed by 2027. The country’s first fabrication unit will be established in Dholera by 2028.” He highlighted that the Kaynes Semiconductor unit in Sanand is the second semiconductor plant in the country.
The minister noted that the first semiconductor plant, powered by Micron Technology, was inaugurated on February 28, and the second plant was inaugurated today, March 31. The third plant is set to be inaugurated in July.
Vaishnaw mentioned that the Kaynes Semiconductor unit has begun industrial production just 14 months after laying its foundation. He emphasized that this development reflects the growing capabilities of India’s semiconductor ecosystem and has encouraged engineers and students across the country.
Regarding global competition, the minister stated, “We must achieve victory in terms of quality and cost; only then can we maintain and strengthen our position globally.” He added that the semiconductor program is supported by the development of a comprehensive ecosystem, including machinery, chemicals, gases, and testing infrastructure.
He also revealed that approximately 60,000 young engineers have been trained in specialized global tools like Synopsys and Cadence. These engineers, coming from 315 universities, are contributing to chip design efforts. “The chips designed by these young engineers are being manufactured in a laboratory in Chandigarh,” he said.
Furthermore, he mentioned that global companies like NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel are working on advanced chip design in India. “Highly complex 2-nanometer chips are being designed in India,” he added, stating, “Our vision is ‘Design in India’ and ‘Make in India.’”
Referring to the next phase, Vaishnaw said, “Under Semiconductor 2.0, the Prime Minister has directed that the entire ecosystem – machines, gases, and chemicals – should be available in India.” He concluded by stating that the country’s goal is to be among the top six semiconductor countries by 2032 and among the top three by 2047.
