Yangon, March 13: The Indian U-17 women’s football team secured a convincing 2-0 victory against Myanmar in a friendly match held at Thuwunna Stadium on Thursday. Both goals were scored by Preetika Barman. The two teams will face off again in a second friendly match on March 14.
This friendly match is part of India‘s preparations for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup, scheduled to take place from May 1 to May 17 in Suzhou, China. Myanmar, which has already qualified for the continental tournament, is using these matches to strengthen its preparations.
India showcased a balanced performance, scoring one goal in each half. Goalkeeper Munni made crucial saves when needed, while the defense, led by Abhista Basnet and Elizabeth Lakra, appeared organized and composed throughout the match.
The Young Tigresses started the match strongly, attempting to build pressure with controlled possession and calculated attacks. However, Myanmar also displayed an aggressive approach in the first half, trying to disrupt India’s rhythm, but India gradually gained control of the match.
In the 31st minute, Indian captain Julian Nongmaithem provided a pass to Alisha Lingdoh from the left flank. The left-back delivered a teasing cross into the box, but Pearl Fernandes was unable to direct her header on target.
India opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a well-executed move. After winning possession near the center circle, Redima Devi Chingkhama fed a precise through ball to Preetika Barman. The winger showed patience, deceiving Myanmar’s goalkeeper, Song Pwin Thyu, and slotting the ball into an empty net just before halftime, giving India a 1-0 lead.
Despite showing some resilience in the first half, Myanmar struggled to maintain their momentum in the second half as India took full control of the match. Pamela Konti’s team increased their pace and began dominating possession, forcing Myanmar deeper into their own half.
Just four minutes into the second half, India doubled their lead. Alva Devi Senjam made a run down the left wing and sent a brilliant cross into the penalty area. The delivery broke through Myanmar’s defense, allowing Preetika Barman to find the net again.
This goal solidified India’s advantage. They continued to control the game, and in the 60th minute, Abhista attempted a free-kick from over 30 yards, which struck the crossbar. Despite missing that opportunity, India maintained their grip on the match with disciplined defending and effective ball movement, keeping Myanmar at bay and comfortably securing the victory.
