Investment in Sports Infrastructure Key for Meghalayas Future: CM Sangma

Shillong, May 3: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated on Saturday that investing in youth and sports infrastructure is the “biggest investment” for the state’s future. He inaugurated advanced sports fields and an indoor sports stadium in Umlingka.

Present at the event were R.V. Lingdoh, Hamletson Dohling, officials from the sports department, members of local Dorbar Shnong institutions, and a large number of regional residents.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister mentioned that the government has been continuously working to ensure balanced development across all regions and assembly constituencies in Meghalaya. He emphasized that the governance system should be sensitive to the concerns and aspirations of the people, ensuring development reaches every area.

Sangma remarked, “As a government, we must listen to the problems of the people and live up to their expectations. Along with major infrastructure projects, we believe that investing in youth and people is the biggest investment.”

He noted that the ₹3.5 crore project should not be viewed merely as an expense but as a long-term investment in building future generations.

The Chief Minister stated that such sports facilities would help nurture disciplined, hardworking players with a spirit of sportsmanship, enabling them to excel in all areas of life.

“I consider this not as an expense but as an investment in the youth and the future of the state,” he added.

Sangma also highlighted the government’s comprehensive initiatives in the sports sector, committing to create a robust environment for players and sports associations through the construction of sports infrastructure and policy support, allowing young talents to advance and compete at higher levels.

Congratulating local residents, especially the youth, Sangma urged the community to take collective responsibility for this new facility to ensure it remains useful, attractive, and active for years to come.

The advanced sports complex includes a badminton court, dressing rooms, toilets, and fully constructed indoor sports halls. This project will directly benefit four local schools: Umlingka Pre-Secondary School, San Shnong Secondary School, Phila Rapsang Secondary School, and Thomas Jones Secondary School. Additionally, around 3,000 youths from the area will also benefit from it.
