New Delhi, June 14 : Journalist Rajat Sharma has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, Pawan Khera, and Ragini Nayak. The case pertains to an incident on June 4 during a news channel show where Sharma allegedly abused Congress leader Ragini Nayak. Rajat Sharma has labeled these accusations as defamatory and requested an interim order to remove the tweets posted by these leaders. Justice Neena Krishna Bansal has reserved the decision on this matter.
Ragini Nayak, Jairam Ramesh, and Pawan Khera accused Rajat Sharma on their Twitter handles, claiming he abused Nayak during his show. Senior lawyer Maninder Singh, representing Sharma, stated that the show aired on June 4, while Nayak made her accusations on June 10, alleging that Sharma abused her on-air. The June 4 show was part of the coverage for the 2024 Lok Sabha election vote count.
Maninder Singh argued that Ragini Nayak deliberately tweeted against Rajat Sharma six days later to defame him. This tweet was shared by the Congress leaders on their Twitter handles, furthering the attempt to malign Sharma’s reputation. Singh emphasized that Rajat Sharma has been a journalist for 40 years and is known for his courteous demeanor, never raising his voice on screen. Singh suggested that Nayak’s accusations surfaced only after one of her followers pointed it out, leading to a deliberate attempt to defame Sharma by including the abusive video in her tweet.
Following these accusations, India TV publicly tagged Ragini Nayak, Jairam Ramesh, and Pawan Khera, stating that the allegations were false and baseless. India TV labeled the accusations as defamatory and classified them as fake news.
