São Paulo, February 8: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has strongly objected to the United States’ role in the internal affairs of Cuba and Venezuela. He emphasized that the solutions to the problems of any country should come from its own people, rather than external powers intervening.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Workers’ Party’s 46th anniversary in Salvador, Bahia, Lula expressed Brazil’s solidarity with the Cuban people. He accused the U.S. policies and speculations of exacerbating the tragedy faced by the Cuban populace.
“Our country stands with the people of Cuba, and as a political party, we must seek ways to assist them,” Lula stated.
He also targeted the U.S. regarding the situation in Venezuela, asserting, “The solution to Venezuela’s problems will come from the Venezuelan people themselves, not the United States or Trump.”
Meanwhile, tensions have escalated regarding dialogue between the U.S. and Cuba. On Thursday, the White House dismissed concerns raised by Cuban leadership, stating that President Donald Trump is prepared for diplomacy and that communication between the two nations is already underway.
A journalist referenced a statement from Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who indicated that Cuba would only engage in discussions with the U.S. if they occur without pressure, unconditionally, at an equal level, and with respect for sovereignty. Additionally, the Cuban government denied Trump’s claim that negotiations are taking place.
In response, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt remarked that the Cuban government is in a dire situation and should exercise caution in its statements against the U.S. However, she reiterated that President Trump is always open to diplomatic discussions, claiming that conversations between the U.S. and Cuban governments are indeed ongoing at this time.
