New Zealand Faces Uphill Battle Against India: Dale Steyn

New Delhi, March 7: The T20 World Cup 2026 final between India and New Zealand is set to take place this Sunday. Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn believes that the Indian team is exceptionally strong in their home conditions, making it extremely difficult for New Zealand to secure a victory.

In a conversation on AB de Villiers’ YouTube channel, Steyn emphasized that defeating the Indian team on their home turf is no easy feat. He stated, “If New Zealand wants to win, they will need a miracle.”

Steyn acknowledged New Zealand as a good team playing excellent cricket, expressing his hope for their success. However, he noted that winning against India seems a daunting task.

In a light-hearted manner, Steyn remarked that if New Zealand fails to win against India, he would label them with the ‘chokers’ tag that has historically been associated with South Africa. New Zealand has reached seven ICC finals but has only won twice, leading Steyn to suggest that they should earn the ‘chokers’ label if they cannot triumph in this final.

AB de Villiers also recalled the 2015 ODI World Cup semi-final, where South Africa lost to New Zealand, expressing regret over that defeat. He mentioned that only South Africa could have beaten Australia on their home ground in the final.

Historically, knockout matches have been challenging for both New Zealand and South Africa. This time, New Zealand eliminated South Africa in the semi-finals, and they have only won two ICC trophies (Champions Trophy and World Test Championship), both against India.

New Zealand’s record against India in T20 World Cup history is impressive, having won all three matches played so far. All eyes will be on New Zealand’s performance in the final.
