Rohit Shetty: From Assistant Director to Action King

Mumbai, March 14: Renowned filmmaker Rohit Shetty, known for blockbuster hits like ‘Golmaal’, ‘Singham’, and ‘Chennai Express’, has earned the title of the Action King in the film industry. His movies are synonymous with high-octane action sequences, thrilling stunts, and spectacular car chases. However, few are aware that his father, M.B. Shetty, was his primary inspiration.

M.B. Shetty, a famous stuntman and action choreographer during the 1970s and 80s, faced numerous injuries in his line of work, which ignited Rohit’s passion for action films. Witnessing his father return home with injuries and bloodshed, Rohit resolved to create action-packed films that would thrill audiences. Today, his films gross millions and set new standards in action cinema.

Rohit was born on March 14, and his father was a well-known figure in the industry. His mother, Ratna Shetty, also contributed to the film world as a junior artist and stuntwoman, performing stunts for actresses like Hema Malini in films such as ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’. Tragically, Rohit lost his father at the young age of 7-8 in 1982, plunging the family into financial turmoil. His mother persevered and guided Rohit into the film industry.

At just 17, Rohit began his career with ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ in 1991, working as an assistant director under Kuku Kohli, where Ajay Devgn made his debut. This marked the beginning of a strong friendship between Rohit and Ajay, leading to many successful collaborations. In his early days, Rohit faced numerous challenges, including pressing Tabu’s sarees and being a spot boy for Kajol, often walking miles to sets while going hungry, as he recounted in interviews.

In 2003, at the age of 30, Rohit directed his first film ‘Zameen’, which did not succeed. Despite this setback, he remained determined. The turning point came in 2006 with ‘Golmaal’, which became a comedy sensation and remains one of the most popular franchises. The release of ‘Singham’ in 2011 solidified Rohit’s reputation as the king of action, followed by hits like ‘Chennai Express’, ‘Singham Returns’, ‘Simba’, ‘Sooryavanshi’, and ‘Singham Again’.

Rohit Shetty’s films are a brilliant blend of action, comedy, and emotions. Beyond filmmaking, he has also hosted the stunt-based show ‘Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi’ and served as a judge on ‘Comedy Circus’.
