Mumbai Police have registered a case against an unknown person following a stabbing attack on Shiv Sena candidate Haji Salim Quraishi in the Sant Dnyaneshwar Nagar area of Bandra East. The incident took place during election campaigning, and despite over 36 hours passing since the attack, the attacker remains at large.
According to police officials, the Khirwadi police station filed the case based on statements given by the victim, Haji Salim Quraishi. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the assailant.
The attack occurred on Wednesday evening around 5 pm, when Quraishi was campaigning with party workers in a narrow, poorly lit lane barely two feet wide. An unknown person stabbed him in the abdomen. Due to the lane’s narrowness and low visibility, neither Quraishi nor his accompanying workers could identify the attacker.
The assault came to light only when Quraishi noticed bleeding from his stomach. He was immediately taken to a hospital by party workers.
Police officials stated that neither the victim nor eyewitnesses could provide any description of the suspect. A senior police officer confirmed that there was no CCTV camera at the scene. Footage from nearby cameras is being examined, but no concrete leads have emerged yet.
Several suspected individuals from the area have been detained for questioning, but no significant breakthrough has been achieved so far. Meanwhile, the Khirwadi police have formally registered a case against the unknown assailant.
Haji Salim Quraishi, contesting from Ward Number 92, was earlier a corporator on an AIMIM ticket before joining Shiv Sena. Following the attack, security measures in the locality have been intensified as police continue to investigate the case from multiple angles.
