Mumbai, May 1: National award-winning playback singer Shreya Ghoshal has graced Hindi cinema with numerous beautiful and romantic songs. Her enchanting voice captivates listeners, but she believes that being a good singer is not enough; one must also possess the qualities of a composer. In a recent exclusive interview, Ghoshal opened up about her vision for music and the journey from singer to composer.
Discussing the challenges of transitioning from a singer to a composer, she said, “This struggle is tough because I am constantly doing it. I have released some singles that I composed myself, collaborating with my younger brother. However, I would say that there is a composer hidden within every singer.” She further explained that these two paths cannot be entirely separate, as when a singer is given a song, composers do not always expect them to follow it strictly.
“You also think, ‘What can I add to the song?’ When you are on the mic, you are constantly being creative. You infuse color into the song, enhance it in some way, or pour your soul into it. In this process, you add some creations and ideas, and it becomes a very natural process,” she added.
Ghoshal aspires to step into the world of music composition but finds it challenging due to time constraints. She mentioned, “If you are creating music independently, you get a lot of freedom. For films, sometimes it becomes very difficult, but due to a lack of time, I avoid this temptation. I want to do it, but then I have to choose one path, and I feel I might not be as good as a composer.”
She looks up to legends Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, aspiring to master singing like them. However, if time permits, she is keen to explore the art of music composition in the future. “I have great respect for composers. If you compare, you will find that they are far ahead of me in their field, but maybe someday I will also be seen doing something similar,” she concluded.
