New Delhi: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) launched the ‘Vande Mataram Coastal Cyclothon 2026’ on January 28, aiming to strengthen the nation’s coastal security while promoting patriotism among citizens.
Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina praised the initiative, calling it a symbol of discipline, dedication, and determination. CISF shared a video featuring Raina on its official social media platform X, where he extended his best wishes to all teams participating in the event and encouraged public involvement.
In the video, Raina said, “I am at Delhi Airport. The CISF Vande Mataram Coastal Cyclothon is underway from January 28 to February 22. Best wishes to all the teams.”
CISF highlighted Raina’s remarks, stating that his words reinforce the strong connection between sporting excellence and national service. He also acknowledged the tireless efforts of CISF personnel in raising awareness about the critical importance of India’s maritime security. The support of such a distinguished athlete strengthens CISF’s resolve to advance impactful initiatives in the national interest.
The cyclothon was virtually inaugurated at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday, with Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai flagging off the event as chief guest. This 25-day national campaign marks the 150th anniversary of the patriotic song ‘Vande Mataram’.
Two CISF cycling teams simultaneously departed from Bakkhali in West Bengal and Lakhpat in Gujarat, commencing their journey along the eastern and western coastlines respectively. Covering approximately 6,500 kilometres, the teams will traverse nine coastal states and two union territories, concluding the event in Kochi on February 22, 2026.
The primary objectives of the Vande Mataram Coastal Cyclothon 2026 include raising awareness among coastal communities about threats such as drug, arms, and explosives smuggling, and promoting vigilance. It aims to strengthen cooperation between coastal populations and security agencies for a robust coastal security network.
Additionally, the initiative honors the sacrifices of freedom fighters, martyrs, security personnel, and their families, reinforcing the spirit of ‘Vande Mataram’. It celebrates India’s rich maritime heritage, traditions, history, and geography, while highlighting the invaluable contributions of coastal communities, especially fishermen.
The cyclothon also encourages fitness, discipline, and a healthy lifestyle among youth and coastal populations, fostering a sense of national pride and community involvement.
