Hyderabad, 8 January: A tragic accident near Hyderabad turned a birthday celebration into mourning early Thursday morning. A speeding SUV collided with a tree near Mirzapur in Mokila, Rangareddy district, resulting in the deaths of four students and leaving one seriously injured.
According to police reports, the group of students was returning to Hyderabad from Mokila after celebrating the birthday of one of the deceased. Among those killed, three were BBA students from ICFAI Business School (IBS), Mokila, while the fourth was a student of MGIT.
The deceased have been identified as Surya Teja (20), Nikhil (20), Rohit (18), and Sumit (20). Police stated that Sumit, who was driving the SUV, was the birthday celebrant. Sumit and Nikhil were third-year BBA students at ICFAI Business School, Surya Teja was in his second year, and Rohit was enrolled at MGIT.
The SUV, moving at high speed, crashed into a tree, causing severe damage to the vehicle. Four students died on the spot, while the fifth, identified as Nakshatra, a 20-year-old female student in her third year of BBA at ICFAI Business School, sustained critical injuries and has been admitted to hospital.
Authorities are investigating whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination to a government hospital in Chevella. The police have registered a case and begun further inquiries.
This incident adds to a recent series of accidents around Hyderabad, where students celebrating occasions such as birthdays have collided with other vehicles, roadside trees, or electric poles while driving at night. In response, the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda police commissionerates have launched intensive drives to check drunk driving, especially during night hours.
