Woman Arrested for Spreading Obscene Messages to Defame Another in Mumbai

Mumbai, April 25: The Kasturba Marg police have arrested a woman from Gujarat for allegedly spreading obscene and objectionable messages on social media to damage another woman’s social image and question her character. The incident took place in the Borivali area.

According to the police, the complainant reported that misleading, obscene, and derogatory comments were intentionally posted about her in a WhatsApp group. These messages contained serious allegations against her character and aimed to socially defame her. The complainant filed a complaint against three women at the Kasturba police station.

The police acted swiftly, registering a case under sections 356(3), 79 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act. During the investigation, police discovered that all three accused women were involved in the conspiracy, with one of them on the run for the past ten days.

Using technical assistance, the Kasturba police traced her location and arrested her from a hotel in Gujarat. A police officer confirmed that the arrested woman is being brought back to Mumbai, while efforts are ongoing to locate the other two accused.

The investigation team is currently conducting a thorough examination of digital evidence, including WhatsApp chat records, viral messages, screenshots, and other electronic data. Police are also trying to determine if there is a larger conspiracy behind the incident and whether any personal disputes or past grudges among the accused women contributed to this event.

The complainant informed the police that the viral obscene messages have severely harmed her reputation within her family and community. Many have begun to question her character, causing her significant mental distress. The police have appealed to all parties to refrain from misusing social media. Spreading obscene or misleading content with the intent to harm someone’s personal reputation is a serious crime, and strict legal action will be taken against those involved.
