Republic Day 2026 Celebrations: A Grand Tribute to 77 Years of Sovereignty

India is jubilantly celebrating its 77th Republic Day today. January 26 marks the historic day when India adopted its Constitution and established itself as a sovereign republic. The heart of the capital, ‘Kartavya Path’, has transformed into a grand stage where thousands of soldiers march, fighter jets roar overhead, and vibrant tableaux showcase the country’s diversity.

This year’s theme for Republic Day 2026 is “150 Years – Vande Mataram,” commemorating the 150th anniversary of the national song penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, which has played a significant role in India’s freedom struggle. Government statements indicate that this theme will be reflected in the parade, cultural displays, tableaux, public competitions, and outreach initiatives, aiming to highlight the historic significance and cultural heritage of Vande Mataram.

The Republic Day parade will commence at 10:30 AM and last approximately 90 minutes, starting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying tribute to martyrs at the National War Memorial, where he will lay a wreath. Following this, the Prime Minister and distinguished guests will arrive at the salute platform on Kartavya Path to observe the parade. The formal escort will be provided by the President’s Bodyguard upon the arrival of the President of India alongside the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission, with the Bodyguard representing the most senior regiment of the Indian Army.

During the ceremony, the national flag will be hoisted, the national anthem will be sung, and a 21-gun salute will be rendered from a 105 mm light field gun by the 172 Field Regiment’s ceremonial battery.

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi extended heartfelt greetings to citizens on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, emphasizing that it is a moment to express gratitude to the immortal heroes who laid down their lives with utmost courage while fulfilling their duties.

On social media platform X, General Dwivedi stated, “On this glorious occasion of the 77th Republic Day, I extend warm wishes to all citizens. This day gives us the opportunity to express our gratitude to the immortal heroes whose unwavering courage, supreme sacrifice, and unparalleled bravery have ensured India’s freedom, sovereignty, and integrity.”

This year’s parade will showcase several new and special features for the first time. Officials noted that the deep-strike capable rocket launcher system ‘Suryaastra’, the newly formed Bhairav light commando battalion, along with Zanskar ponies and Bactrian camels will be part of the parade for the first time. In a remarkable display, the 61 Cavalry’s mounted contingent will showcase battle gear in 2026. Moreover, critical weapons and indigenous platforms will march in a “Phased Battle Array Formation” on Kartavya Path, simulating an actual combat deployment.

The 61 Cavalry is recognized for its remarkable presence, with personnel donning traditional attire and distinctive headgear; this unit typically leads the armed forces in formal parades.

Additionally, on this occasion, Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed wishes to India for its 77th Republic Day, with the state-run Xinhua News Agency quoting him referring to India and China as “good neighbors, friends, and partners.” He noted that bilateral relations have seen continuous improvement over the past year and are crucial for maintaining global peace and promoting prosperity.
