New Delhi: In a significant development for democracy in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, 47 villages across Bijapur, Narayanpur, and Sukma districts celebrated Republic Day on Monday by hoisting the national flag for the first time. This historic event marks a major milestone in restoring democratic traditions in an area long affected by left-wing extremism.
According to Chhattisgarh government officials, the security situation in Bastar has improved substantially over the past two years due to a coordinated approach by the central and state governments, relentless anti-Maoist operations by security forces, and increased cooperation from local communities.
As part of these efforts, 59 new security camps have been established in Maoist-affected areas to ensure a permanent administrative and security presence. Last year, Republic Day was celebrated in 53 villages, and this year 47 additional villages have joined the democratic process.
Villagers enthusiastically participated in the ceremonies, marking a shift in regions once considered highly sensitive and remote. Their willingness to engage in national celebrations reflects growing trust in governance and the rule of law.
Currently, over 100 security camps operate throughout Bastar, bolstering safety and enabling development activities. Basic infrastructure such as roads, schools, healthcare, communication networks, and banking services is gradually reaching previously neglected and inaccessible villages. The recent restoration of banking services in the Maoist-hit Jagargunda area exemplifies this positive change.
Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai stated that Bastar is being brought out of the shadow of continuous violence and integrated into the mainstream development agenda. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Chhattisgarh government is committed to strengthening peace, trust, and democratic values in the region.
The hoisting of the tricolour on January 26 in these 47 villages stands as a powerful symbol of peace, democracy, and a new beginning for Bastar.
