Junagadh: On the eve of Republic Day, the Government of India announced the Padma Awards for the year 2026. The awards recognise outstanding contributions in various fields such as art, social service, education, and medicine. Among the distinguished recipients is Mir Hajibhai Kasambhai, a renowned dholak player from Junagadh, Gujarat.
Mir Hajibhai Kasambhai will be honoured with the Padma Shri award in the field of art. For over six decades, he has mesmerised audiences not only across India but also internationally with his dholak performances. His dedication has brought Indian Folk Music to the global stage, showcasing Gujarat’s and India’s rich cultural heritage through numerous performances both at home and abroad.
At the age of 80, the announcement of this prestigious award moved him emotionally. In an interaction, he dedicated the Padma Shri to his gurus and to the land of Junagadh. He expressed his happiness and gratitude, saying, “Today, the Government of India has announced the Padma Shri award. I am very happy. I want to sincerely thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since his time as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, he has appreciated and encouraged my art. This moment is filled with pride and honour for Junagadh.”
The family of Mir Hajibhai Kasambhai is celebrating the joyous occasion, receiving numerous congratulatory messages from relatives and well-wishers.
It is worth noting that the Padma Awards are among India’s highest civilian honours, presented in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. They recognise distinguished service across various fields including art, social service, public affairs, science and engineering, business and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service. The Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order, and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field. These awards are traditionally announced on the occasion of Republic Day each year.
