New Delhi, February 4: The Delhi Assembly Speaker, Vijender Gupta, has directed the Privilege Committee to conduct a detailed investigation into the actions of the Punjab Police related to the Atishi video controversy. Gupta stated that there appears to be a prima facie case of privilege violation and contempt of the House.
The inquiry was initiated following a complaint filed by Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra. Gupta emphasized that the privilege committee will investigate the roles of the Punjab Director General of Police and the Jalandhar Police Commissioner.
This matter pertains to an FIR filed by Iqbal Singh concerning allegedly edited or tampered video clips of statements made by Atishi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, on January 6, 2026.
After considering the response from the Punjab Police and Mishra’s complaint, the Speaker concluded that the issue is directly related to the proceedings of the House, falling within the scope of legislative privilege.
A press release noted that despite the Assembly Secretariat informing the Punjab Police that the Speaker and the House had taken cognizance of the matter, an FIR was lodged, and public statements were made alleging tampering with the Assembly proceedings.
The Speaker dismissed the written explanations provided by the DGP of Punjab and the Jalandhar Police Commissioner as unsatisfactory. They claimed that the Punjab Police acted according to the law and that the alleged acts were committed by individuals outside the Delhi Assembly.
The press release further stated that despite repeated reminders, the Punjab Police failed to provide the necessary documents to the Delhi Assembly Secretariat, including the complaint, FIR, reports from Punjab Police’s social media experts, and forensic reports from the Punjab Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
Additionally, correspondence with the director of Punjab FSL revealed that the forensic report was only shared with the relevant police officials.
