
Kolkata, February 8: In a significant development regarding the violent clash between two groups in the Golpark area of Kolkata, police have detained three more individuals on Sunday. This brings the total number of arrests in the incident to 23.
Local residents have expressed concerns over the continued absence of the main accused, Bishwajit Poddar, also known as Sona Pappu, questioning why he has not yet been apprehended.
On Saturday night, officers from the Rabindra Sarovar police station arrested three young men: Sougat Basu, Mintu Bhhanja, and Prabir Pramanik. Sougat and Mintu are residents of the Kasba police jurisdiction, while Prabir lives in the Rabindra Sarovar area of South Kolkata.
According to police investigations, these three individuals were involved in the incident that occurred on the night of February 1. Authorities are now interrogating the arrested suspects to ascertain the whereabouts of Sona Pappu, who has been evading capture since the incident.
The violent clash erupted last Sunday on Kakulia Road in Golpark, under the jurisdiction of the Rabindra Sarovar police station. Following the incident, local reactions frequently mentioned Pappu and his gang, with some residents alleging that Pappu’s group is responsible for instigating unrest in the area.
Meanwhile, three FIRs have been filed at the Rabindra Sarovar police station, one of which was registered under suo motu for an attack on a police vehicle.
According to local sources and police reports, the dispute began around 8:30 PM last week during a club picnic in the Panchanantala area near Golpark, escalating into a violent confrontation.
The clash reportedly involved local businessman Bapi Haldar’s group and Sona Pappu’s gang, with residents claiming that Pappu’s group is attempting to assert dominance over the area, targeting Bapi in the process.
Witnesses allege that around 100 to 150 miscreants attacked the locality, with reports of gunfire and the use of homemade bombs. Sharp weapons were also reportedly employed during the altercation.
During the chaos, police vehicles and local residents’ motorcycles were vandalized, and bricks were thrown between the rival groups. That same night, police recovered spent bullet casings and bomb fragments from the scene.
