New Delhi, February 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Japan’s first female Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, on her historic victory in the recent elections. He expressed confidence in elevating India-Japan friendship to new heights.
In a post on the social media platform X, Modi wrote, “Congratulations, Sanae Takaichi, on your historic win in the House of Representatives Elections! Our special strategic and global partnership plays a crucial role in promoting global peace, stability, and prosperity. I am confident that under your capable leadership, we will continue to take India-Japan friendship to new heights.”
Last year, during the G20 summit in Johannesburg on November 23, Modi held a bilateral meeting with Takaichi, discussing ways to enhance cooperation in areas such as innovation, defense, and talent mobility.
Following the meeting, Modi shared on X, “I had a meaningful meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. We discussed ways to accelerate bilateral cooperation in innovation, defense, talent mobility, and other areas. We are also considering strengthening trade relations between our countries. A strong India-Japan partnership is vital for a better planet.”
According to exit polls from Japanese media, Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is poised to secure a comfortable majority in the snap elections held on Sunday, potentially achieving a two-thirds majority in coalition with allies.
The LDP, along with its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, is projected to win up to 366 seats in the House of Representatives, based on surveys. Takaichi dissolved the lower house on January 23, marking the first time in 60 years that a regular parliamentary session began with the house being dissolved.
