Dispute Over Water Balloons Leads to Fatality in Utham Nagar

New Delhi, March 8: A minor incident during Holi celebrations escalated into violence in Utham Nagar, resulting in the death of a young man. The Dwarka district police have arrested seven individuals, including six adults and one minor, in connection with the case. Authorities have stated that the situation is under control and are closely monitoring the area to maintain peace.

The incident began on the night of March 4, 2026, around 11 PM, when a dispute arose between two neighboring families in the Utham Nagar police jurisdiction of northwest Delhi. An 11-year-old girl threw a water-filled balloon while playing Holi, which accidentally hit a woman from the neighboring family.

This led to a heated argument that escalated into a physical altercation. People gathered on the street and attacked each other, resulting in injuries to a total of eight individuals from both sides. Most of the injured were discharged from the hospital the same day, but one young man, Tarun (26 years old), sustained serious injuries.

Tarun was admitted to the hospital but died the following afternoon on March 5. Initially, the police registered a case under Section 110/3(5) of the Indian Penal Code for the fight and arrested four individuals. Following the death, Section 103(1) (murder) was added to the charges, leading to the swift arrest of a total of seven people, including a minor.

According to the police, both families are originally from Rajasthan and have been neighbors for several decades. They have had ongoing disputes over minor issues such as parking and waste disposal. Some anti-social elements attempted to exacerbate the situation, but the police have denied any communal angle, attributing the incident to a long-standing feud between the two families.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Kusal Pal Singh stated that continuous patrolling is being conducted in the area. Surveillance has been increased by dividing the region into zones, sectors, and sub-sectors.
