Mumbai, March 10: The ODI Cup final between Tasmania and New South Wales is set to take place on March 11. Leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha will retain his place in the playing eleven as Adam Zampa has decided not to play against Tasmania in the title match. Sangha is currently the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, having claimed 18 wickets in seven matches.
This season has been different for Adam Zampa. Following Australia’s early exit from the T20 World Cup and the scheduling clash with the women’s series against India, Zampa was among the white-ball players available for both teams. Although he wanted to play, he opted out when it became clear that the conditions in Hobart would not be favorable for two leg-spinners.
Zampa has played only one match for New South Wales this season, where he bowled alongside Sangha. Sangha has taken 18 wickets at an average of 18.05 in 11 international matches.
Greg Mail, Chief Performance Officer of New South Wales, told ESPNcricinfo, “Initially, Adam was available and wanted to play. We discussed it, and he is always mindful of how his availability affects Tanveer’s selection. He clearly stated that since Tanveer is the leading wicket-taker in this tournament and is still improving his bowling, he did not want his selection or availability to keep Tanveer out of the team. We agreed on that.”
He added, “The question then arose whether it was the right time to play two leg-spinners in the day-night match at Bellerive. We have played them together in some matches over the past few years. When we decided it was not the right fit, Zampa actually stepped aside to ensure Tanveer could play.”
The New South Wales team includes: Curtis Patterson (Captain), Sean Abbott, Joel Davis, Ben Dwarshius, Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green, Ryan Hadley, Liam Hatcher, Sam Constable, Josh Philippe, William Salter, Lachlan Shaw, and Tanveer Sangha.
